1. Starbucks is offering a financial method of motivation in the article as shares come under that category. The free shares are likely to motivate the staff at Starbucks as they are receiving millions of pounds and money is the main motivation for most people in a business. Therefore, this is a financial method of motivation that will encourage loyalty within the Starbucks staff as they will look forward to more free shares in the future and will be determined to work their way to it.
ReplyDelete2. Starbucks is offering a non-financial method of motivation in the article as the offer does not include a salary increase but instead, a different approach to the same job. This offer is likely to motivate the staff as it makes their job less monotonous and adds a bit of a difference to standing behind a counter all day taking orders. It gives the staff a chance to explore different parts of the world and learn new things. The staff receives the benefit of travelling across the world for free which will motivate them as they will expect more experiences such as these in the future.
3. Even though both methods of motivation are quite effective, the financial method would motivate the staff the most in my opinion. This is because of the extra money the staff will receive. The staff is motivated by money as money is the main thing needed to run a business and be successful. Higher salaries are more likely to attract applicants as people do jobs to earn money, not to have fun. Money holds the power to everything and most people would be determined to continue their boring jobs if they get a decent salary. The non-financial method of motivation would also attract employees as some people want a difference in their job atmosphere to make the job more interesting. However, if the employee does not receive any extra money for the change, it will fail to motivate them and encourage them. Therefore, the financial method is the best option to motivate the staff at Starbucks.
Hi Tay Tay good answers for both the two articles with solid explanations as to why they would lead to motivation. For the Off-the-job consider the benefits to starbucks of having a more knowledgeable workforce and think about how employees feel more confident as a result.
DeleteYour second answer is very good at discussing the financial methods of motivation but neglects the other side of the argument. This reduces the marks available in the exam and you really need to consider making that second argument also before coming to your final opinion.
Tat Tay you explained your arguments really well but next time you could try and explain on both sides of the argument. But overall i think you tackled the questions really well.
DeleteAt first glance this looks
DeleteVery informative and very revised
Even when i read through it the answers are complex
Never in any of the answers do you go off topic
Giving that the answers are long you have put time into this
Every sentence is thought out carefully and specifically
Do more real world situations to get more marks
Some of the answers to tend to repeat alot
Even though this is true it is still very good
Very few answers are quit like yours

You added a lot of detail in your work, and explained your answers very thoroughly.
DeleteWell done Tay Tay! You explained your ideas well and justified your opinions, although you could explain both sides of the argument. Amazing work :-)
DeleteGreg :') youre both so saaaaad! :D
Delete1) The article talks financial motivation, it is about Starbucks employees receiving millions of pounds in free shares next year, which will no doubt motivate them and also stay loyal for another year as the employees will not receive their shares. This method is financial as the employees are receiving shares witch are worth money, Starbucks is giving their employees money in the form of shares so it is a financial motivation.
ReplyDelete2) The second article talks about a non-financial motivation as the employees are going to Africa and not receiving any money for it so it is like a holiday to them as they will not work in their shops but instead are on a holiday picking and harvesting beans to also learn how the beans the pick will eventually find themselves in one of their shops, but they not all employees may find this method of motivation motivating as they may just may not feel like doing very handwork for a low reward.
3) In my opinion I think that the financial motivation where the employees receive shares is more motivating as many in the business may have taken the job as they were interested in the money aspect of it. The non-financial motivation also plays a role as it still does motivate the employed but still the financial way to motivation does have a bigger impact on the employees than the non-financial way.
Sher Ali Khan you have not mentioned the downsides of financial motivation and doesn't explain the non financial impact of giving out shares.
Delete1. In this article, Starbucks is offering a financial method of motivation! Its a financial method because the article tells us that Starbucks is offering its employees free shares. These free shares will encourage the staff to be more motivated because only 6,700 of all the staff in the UK are eligible to receive a free share, due to the fact that most people are money motivated and the limited number of people who will receive a share, staff will be more determined and will try to work harder in order to impress their bosses and be able to be nominated for a free share and earn millions!
ReplyDelete2. In this second article, Starbucks are offering a non-financial method of motivation. Its a non-financial method because Starbucks staff are taken to Africa to see a different aspect of their job (picking the coffee beans and planting the coffee saplings) compared to the usual behind the counter fulfilling customer orders duties they participate in and because there is no salary or extra pay included for the hard work they do on the trip, its merely for a brand new experience. Staff benefit from this because it gives them a chance to explore the world and learn new things from a different perspective. This method will encourage staff to be more motivated because they will be keen to escape their every day routine for something a little bit different and exciting despite the lack of financial gain.
3. In my opinion, I think there should be a balance between financial and non-financial motivation methods. This is because some people are money motivated and would prefer getting a financial gain from what they do, such as working harder to earn the chance to receive a share in Starbucks. The prospect of earning more financially also draws in more applicants for the job and gives Starbucks more attention in the media boosting their image. Although business should consider, that money might not mean everything to people. Some people would prefer non-financial motivation, they would rather see a different aspect of the job and not get any money out of it because for them the experience is so cultivating and exciting its enough for them to get motivation out of it and to work harder to be able to gain the chance to go back and relive the experience again. Both financial and non-financial methods are important because every individual has a different idea to what motivates them and so companies should try to cater for both. I don't believe one is better than the other when it comes to motivation because everyone wil have a different idea to what is better and what is worst so I think doing 50:50 and suiting to everyones financial motivation needs and non-financial is the best way for a business to motivate and encourage its staff because everyones needs are fulfilled and the employees can find something specific to them for encouragement.
You have included valid reasons for why they would be money motivated, you have also explained.
DeleteYou have included valid, good reasons and explanations why a trip to Africa would non-finacially motivate an employee.
Good reasons to backup your opinionated comments.
You really analysed the articles well and used them to apply that knowledge to the task. You then gave a personal judgement which is very specific and detailed :)

DeleteThis is a very detailed explanation and I can see that you tackled every answer with great depth. The third answer has a justified opinion which states both sides of the argument.
Deletewawaweewah you have obviously thought through all of your answers in depth and have spent a lot of time on your task.

ReplyDelete1) In this article Starbucks are offering a financial method of motivation because they are basically saying that if their staff members are kept motivated throughout the year then they will receive their "restricted stock units" which will be handed out in January, with 50% of the award vesting at the end of the first year and the remainder released in chunks of 25% over the next two years. Basically 6,700 UK staff are eligible for the shares award which I think will indeed keep the staff motivated if they are willing to remain eligible for the shares award.
ReplyDelete2) In this article, Starbucks are using a non-financial method of motivation by sending their employees to the farms in which their coffee beans and products are being produced. The point in this is so that it can create an "emotional connection" between its staff and their product, one that it hopes they'll share with customers and colleagues. I think this will motivate the staff because they will view the whole business process in which they work for differently, and learn something from this experience which could be useful. It was quoted that at the following morning's feedback sessions, Starbucks employees give their impressions. "To me, it was a privilege," says a manager from Madrid. "It was a human experience – we were able to see the families, the farmers, the kids, the whole community. We were all connected. And it was two-way. We gave a material gift, we were given an emotional gift. When I tell my colleagues back home about Sing'isi, they will kill to sell Sing'isi coffee. It's had a very real effect upon me." I think this is the real reason why starbucks employees are sent to the farms because they will gain a real feel for what their business is about and why they are working for it.
3) I think it depends on what the employee is like, whether the employee is working purely for the money or for the experience. I personally believe the non-financial method will be more motivating as it will not only motivate the employees but it will make them really want to work for their money, they will be motivated in a way that a financial method wouldn’t be able to. They will understand why they need to work so hard for their money and understand what their company is about, what kind of products they are selling and where their products come from.
amazing!
DeleteI can see with the amount you have written that you have spent a lot of time on the three questions, going through each article with depth.
Deleteso nice
DeleteWell answered and justified in depth! WELL DONE EMILIEEEEEEEE :-)
DeleteQuestion 1: Starbucks is offering a financial benefit to its employees. This particular method of handing out shares will be effective as not only does the money of course benefit the employees, but the risk of the shares may be seen as exciting. For example, if the employees shares rose, they would feel more excited and happier about there position, building confidence and job motivation. The employees would then, on top of that, want to work harder to potentially earn more shares from their bosses, improving relations and motivation.
ReplyDeleteQuestion 2: In this article, Starbucks offers a chance of change from the usual job providing workers with a vastly interesting, opportunistic change of atmosphere in different countries. This will help the workers not only in the workplace, but in their lifespan, which makes the employees eager and excited to be at work and motivates them to work harder and stay focused.
Question 3: I believe that although both methods of motivation are incredibly influential on the members of staff working at Starbucks, in this instance I must state that the non-financial method is the superior option. I understand that money may not be all that matters to people, but I also feel that being given work experience in a country like Africa could hugely improve the chances of wellbeing in a Starbucks employee. Of course, some people would not like the idea of a non financial motivator compared to a financial motivator, but for most people, the best thing that could happen to them of the two would be the global experience. I think this as if you give someone money, they may invest in something wisely or poorly, or waste it. There are too many ways that the money can be used that is unsustainable. If you give someone experience, a good looking CV, tools to do the job and a furthered knowledge, that can last for life, and is much more easily investable in something.
Think about your answer
DeleteWell explained and justified. You can tell you've thought your answers through!
DeleteGood answers.YOU HAVE TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!!!!!!!But you explained it very well.
Delete1. In the first article, Starbucks is offering a financial method of motivation. The reason why this is a financial method of motivation because Starbucks employees will be able to gain free shares, thus gaining more money, and as only 6,700 UK staff are eligible for the share, employees in the UK will work harder in order to impress their bosses as most people are motivated by money and would try their hardest in order to gain more money.
ReplyDelete2. In the second article, Starbucks is offering a non-financial method of motivation, firstly being that there is no extra salary and second being they go to Africa to see what it is like for those who make a crucial part in the coffee business, growing and picking the beans. Although some people my be motivated from being able to go to Africa and knowing what it is like for those who have to work hard out of pure interest, it may not capture everyone's attention and may just end up depressing some people seeing others work so hard for such little money. But some staff might be encouraged knowing how one of the core ingredients in coffee is made and may take their job much more seriously and may try to stay positive throughout working at Starbucks.
3. I would say the although some people will be motivated from the non-financial method of motivation, the majority of the population would probably be motivated from the financial method. Although some people are interested in how things are made and would want to find out more on how Starbucks is able to get its source of beans and what it is like to get the source of beans, most people are motivated with the idea of gaining more money and would most likely try their hardest to gain more money by taking their job more seriously and by doing their best. The financial method also makes employees more happier, knowing that they have a chance at gaining more money, at by using the financial method, people may be taking more about the company, which will give the company more attention from more people and the company may end up having more applicants trying to work for the company
decent answer, explain in more dept
DeleteHello Hannan Badar, good answers for the question and a good conclusion. I can tell you have read the 2 articles provided and created good detailed answers. The conclusion shows both sides of the argument well. Nice work.
Delete1.This incentive scheme of handing out free shares will hope to get financial motivation out from the employees at Starbucks. The employees will try their best at work in order to be nominated for receiving the shares therefore the company will obtain a more motivated staff. Some employees may anticipate more perks in the future and try to get a head start by being consistently motivated, even after the shares are distributed out, in order to impress their boss.
ReplyDelete2.The idea of sending employees to Africa in order to “emotionally connect” them with the product they are selling is a form of non-financial motivation. Starbucks is providing a foreign working environment for the employees and the chance to learn a new set of skills. The employees will be more motivated as they will feel privileged to be sent abroad on a trip, which is funded by the company, to do something very peculiar and still receive the same salary as working in a café. The fact that the workforce will look at the coffee they serve with a new perspective, after the trip, will also encourage motivation, as they will hopefully serve with more enthusiasm. Another reason this method may get the staff to be more motivated is because they will be keen to escape their every day routine for something different and exciting despite the lack of financial gain. However, they may feel that it is not worth doing more work (manual labour) and not be paid extra. Showing its employees what it’s like to be on the producing end of the business will cause Starbucks quite a financial dent, performing this expedition.
3.Both methods offered by Starbucks to provoke motivation within its employees are very effective. People are motivated by different things, however, non-financial motivation is very scarce; in my opinion, I think financial motivation prevails. Most people join jobs to receive an income. If someone wanted to experience new things and have more exposure he/she would have opted for a different job, not working in Starbucks. The distribution of free shares is the most likely to motivate more employees due to the money involved.
1. In the first article Starbucks are offering a financial method of motivation, This is because star bucks offer their staff free shares, This will motivate them because they know star bucks is a succesul company, and they will make money in the future off the shares.
ReplyDelete2.In the second article starbucks are offering a non financial method of motivation, as they are taken to Africa to see the different aspects of the job they do themselves, examples are the farming off the cocoa. This helps because it gives them a different view of their job, and may give them a better understanding of the third world.
3.In my opinion
Hi Rowan, I think this didn't quite get published properly. Have a look tomorrow
DeleteA very thorough third answer. I can see you really tackled the task with depth.
Delete1) The first article states that baristas (coffee bartenders) will be receiving free shares, earning them millions of pounds in total. This is evidently a financial method of motivation as the staff will be working harder in return for financial gain. I think it will encourage staff to be more motivated because they will be working towards getting more money, which is something most of us look forward to. this is a good method as it means staff have something extra to work for, not just a normal, average, boring salary. However, there are some negative points about this method because it will cost the company a lot of money, handing out free shares instead of selling them or keeping them.
ReplyDelete2) The second article states that Starbucks is offering a non-financial method of motivation. I think this because the employees aren't receiving financial gain but are still being encouraged to be more motivated by seeing what it is like for people who have it tougher than them and have to work a lot harder to earn a lot less money.
3) I think both methods are good for motivating employees. The second method is touching and will catch a lot of peoples attention. They will notice how easy it is for them and try to work harder as a result. however, this will only be temporary as people forget things, and there will be a few people who wont even take notice of life in Africa, and take their life for granted. This is why i think the first article shows the best method for motivation as it makes employees keep working harder on a stable, permanent basis.
In the first article, Starbucks is offering a financial method of motivation as it has set out a scheme to give the 6,700 current staff working in Starbucks free shares to the company. This plan would encourage staff to work better as a larger portion of people prefer a financial bonus rather than an non-financial bonus. The shares could also motivate the workers as they would have the excitement of owning there own shares. Also the shares would motivate staff over a 3 year period as they would receive there shares over installments, that means they would keep motivated so they are able to receive there shares.
ReplyDelete2.In the second article, Starbucks is offering a non-financial way of motivation by sending their employees to one of their coffee suppliers located in Tanzania. The employees that have been selected from the European branches of Starbucks, get to experience the most crucial part of the coffee business, the growing and harvesting of the coffee beans. The selected few will get the experience of being the farmer and having the experience of actually being able to visit Africa and seeing the difference between how people live. Not everyone will be motivated by this but some people will.
3. Both methods of motivation being used by Starbucks in Europe are different but, they both do the same thing by motivating people. The first article is a type of financial motivation using shares to award the staff and keep them motivated, while the second article is a non-financial method of motivation by sending staff to Africa and letting them experience the production of coffee. These two types of motivation will effect different people, as people have different ways of motivation. But i think that the first article(financial motivation) would be a better way motivation as a larger group of prefer money from a job than anything else.
Hey Calum, good answers for the questions, you have obviously spent some time thinking about your answers. An improvement can be to expand on your last answer, justifying more about what is the best method and coming to an overall conclusion that sums everything up.
DeleteGreat answers, include the benefit Starbucks will have for releasing these schemes.
DeleteHey Calum, good answers for the questions, you have obviously spent some time thinking about your answers. An improvement can be to expand on your last answer, justifying more about what is the best method and coming to an overall conclusion that sums everything up.
DeleteWell explained answers that are in depth and well thought out but you could justify why you've chosen financial motivation in question 3!
Delete1.This first article shows that Starbucks are using the financial method. This is financial because Starbucks employees are gaining free shares. This will keep them motivated as if the shares went up the employees will stay happy and motivated.
ReplyDelete2.In this second article, Starbucks is offering a non-financial method. This shows that its financial because they are motivating employees using different methods other than using shares. This will keep some people motivated as some of the employees will gain the experience from visiting Africa and will stay motivated.
3. In my opinion I think that the financial motivation where the employees receive shares is more motivating as many in the business may have taken the job as they were interested in the money aspect of it.The non financial i think also makes people motivated but not as much as financial. This is because most of the people prefer gaining shares and not anything else, also some people just work for the money and not for the pleasure and excitement.
good work man!
Deleteفعلت حسنا، أنا أشعر أنك فعلت بشكل جيد للغاية ولكنك يمكن أن تستخدم مزيد من التفاصيل
DeleteGood answers Mahmoud, if a little brief. You could improve by thinking and adding more to your points, using your imagination on every possible factor. I like your evaluation, you have included some great points and argued both sides.
ReplyDelete1. In the first article Starbucks is offering a financial method of motivation as that shares that they are granting 6700 employees mean that those employees will get a share of the profit that Starbucks makes meaning that if they want more money they will work harder to make Starbucks more popular and in turn get more money out of their shares. Since the reason most people get jobs is to gain money, this seems like a great way to motivate employees as they know that if they work harder the more they will get out of their share.
ReplyDelete2. In this article Starbucks is offering non financial motivation to its employees. They are sending their employees off overseas to see the farms and factories that the coffee they are serving is made. Starbucks is doing this to try and create an emotional connection between the company and its employees. This is a good way to get the employees to work harder and to gain some new employees as the idea of traveling to different countries might draw people in and get them to work harder as they know how the farmers work hard and the factory people as well.
3.In my opinion I think the financial motivation will work better as the employees get their own free shares which means they get more money and work at the same place for the same hours which will appeal to a lot of people. there are although some non financial benefits that other companies give that would contest this financial motivation that Starbucks gives. For example, Google employees get a lot of different "environments" that allow them to work in their own comfort zone. they also get free food and a lot of quirky ideas that are quite unique to Google like slides and fire poles that allow them to travel from one place to the next.
1. In the first article Starbucks offering shares to their customers might seem like just financial motivation but it's not. It's true shares can be exchanged for money but it teaches the employees about a new aspect of business which they might not necessarily be familiar with as they would need to learn about how the stock market works in order to gain the maximum potential reward from their shares. As shareholders in Starbucks it becomes even more important for the employees for Starbucks to succeed because their own investment is at risk. This is essentially a combination of both.
ReplyDelete2. It is clear in this article that here they're using non-financial motivation which also helps them market the fact that they use fair trade coffee. Today most large scale companies are thought to be evil; their employees would quit with any opportunity they get and all positive out reach programs initiated are looked upon in a cynical manner as just as a marketing stint but taking the employees to the farms would show them how many people rely on the success of Starbucks for their livelihoods to improve and are for most people it will be a welcome change to routine life.
3.In my opinion the first method of motivation is the best as it is a combination of financial and non financial motivation. The profit from the shares is not guaranteed which means the success of the business becomes paramount to the employees who will work harder in order to achieve that to maximise their profits. They won't think of the company as a cold, heartless corporation but think they're a part of the business themselves which means people feel like they belong more to the company. The second method is a great idea but some people might not be passionate about learning about coffee or improving the livelihoods of the poor. The need to work harder because poor people rely on the success of your business might only last a few weeks after the trip and the affects will be short lived. A good way of analysing the effectiveness of both these strategies would be to aks the employees to fill out surveys.
